Drupal Commerce is a modular ecommerce framework that runs inside Drupal. That makes it a strong fit in some projects and overkill in others.
When it fits
- Content and commerce are tightly linked, for example publications, memberships, courses or events with products attached.
- You have unusual product models, pricing rules or order workflows.
- You already run Drupal and want one system, one login and one editorial workflow.
- You need to integrate deeply with ERP, CRM or fulfilment systems.
When something else is better
- A straightforward catalogue with standard checkout. A hosted platform will get you live faster and cost less to run.
- A team with no Drupal experience and no plan to hire it.
Things to plan for
Payment gateways and PCI scope, tax and shipping rules, inventory sync, emails and order lifecycle, and performance under load. Drupal’s caching model needs thought around carts and logged-in customers.
How we decide
We look at the product model, the integration list and who will run the store day to day. If a hosted store does the job, we say so.
